Too Much Extra Movement On Strokes!
Here are the errors I typically see related to extra movement:
1) Too much backswing for the shot in question
2) Too much wrist action right around the time of contact with the ball
3) Too much follow through or what I sometimes call "extra jazz" after contact with the ball
Now, I'm not saying all of these mistakes are happening at once on the same shot for any given player. It's usually one or maybe two happening on different strokes depending on the shot that is being attempted.
For example, the same player may have too much wrist action going on at the time of contact during a backhand slice groundstroke but a good backswing and reasonable follow through with the shoulder despite the shaky contact.
Yet, on a forehand volley, they may have a very stable wrist and paddle face angle through contact but their backswing and follow through is far too big for the shot they’re hitting.
I'd be willing to bet that as you're reading this, you are thinking of at least one shot that you just know has some "extra" on it that doesn't need to be there.
Whatever that shot is for you. It's not going to get fixed in gameplay. You have to isolate it and work on it with great repetition through drilling.
Not only that, you need to start your rebuilding process in a particular way.
The mistake I see a lot of people make is that they go out and try to drill a shot that needs a technical rebuild while doing it at "game speed".
That's not going to work for a bigger technical change such as this. Get out there against the wall, against a ball machine or against a drilling partner and go SLOW so that you have time to think through the correction as you hit.
If you can't do it when the ball is slow, you can't do it when the ball is fast so there's no point in skipping ahead.
In addition to extra movement on strokes, I've identified two other big issues I see that keep players stuck below 4.0.
It's way too much to unpack in a single email so I went ahead and made a brand new video for you on these two critical things you must overcome if you want to breakthrough into 4.0+.
